Amar Singh Chamkila (1960–1988) was a groundbreaking Punjabi singer, songwriter, and musician, born in the village of Dugri near Ludhiana, Punjab. He belonged to the Dalit Ravidasia community, a marginalized caste in Indian society. Despite facing social barriers, Chamkila rose to fame with his fearless lyrics that spoke openly about desire, caste, addiction, and everyday rural life — topics often considered taboo.
His popularity soared through live performances, especially with his wife and singing partner, Amarjot Kaur. However, his bold themes and lower-caste identity drew criticism from conservative and upper-caste sections of society.
On March 8, 1988, Chamkila and Amarjot were assassinated by unidentified gunmen while arriving for a performance in Mehsampur, Punjab. The motive remains unclear, but many believe he was targeted due to the controversial nature of his songs and his rising influence as a Dalit artist challenging social norms. Despite his untimely death, Chamkila remains a powerful symbol of artistic freedom and resistance.
