Stories of Textile Crafts of India

Project type

Illustration, Photography, Research Documentation

Date

2020

Location

Gujarat, India

Amounee works with artisans from Gujarat, offering handicrafts and handlooms that reflect the region's rich cultural heritage. Among the most sought-after crafts are Patola, Tangaliya, Kala Cotton, and Ajrakh.

My role was to illustrate the stories behind these traditional crafts. The primary goal was to raise awareness among customers about the deep-rooted history and culture associated with each craft. To make the message more memorable and impactful, I created simple, narrative-based illustrations.

Each craft carries its own unique identity, cultural background, and historical significance. However, most customers who purchase these handmade goods are unaware of the traditions and stories behind them. The intricate processes and skilled labor involved in creating each piece are often overlooked.

Through my work, I wanted to highlight that wearing these crafts means representing an entire cultural legacy. Additionally, many artisan and weaver communities are socially marginalized due to the caste system, despite their immense creativity and dedication. This project aimed to bring visibility to their rich heritage and honor their contributions through art.
