“Urfe Aalo,” a play written by Maulikraj Shrimali and performed by the Whistle Blower Theatre group, compels its audience to face the grim reality of manual scavenging—an exploitative practice akin to bonded labour. The story centers on Nilesh, a young man from the Valmiki community, who aspires to break free from the caste-assigned profession. During his school years, Nilesh was actively involved in a theatre group focused on raising social awareness and hoped to pursue acting further. However, his father Dinesh, a manual scavenger himself, urges Nilesh to abandon college and take up a job as a sanitation worker to support their struggling family.
